Select Question Group

Below you will see a randomly generated number that you should select from the drop-down box to the right before saving and continuing. You will be randomly assigned to one of three crime categories to help us best understand how to most accurately distinguish depravity in crime, in a way that reflects your beliefs and preferences. Your voice will be counted among all of those who participate and present a cross section of societal attitudes about depravity.

Instructions For Participants

In this study, we are interested in how YOU view depravity and how your perspective of depravity may differ from or be similar to others. On the next page, you will be presented with 25 different items for consideration. In previous research we have already determined that each of these qualities of crime are depraved to some degree. We now want to hear from you to establish how depraved each of these qualities are.

Please think about each of the items, and rate them on a scale of;

1 (depraved to the least degree) to 100 (depraved to the most extreme degree).

This research survey is studying how much more depraved some items are than others. Remember to feel free to use the whole range available to score each item.

This exercise is about your opinion, your perception of how depraved a given item is, and how depraved it is relative to other items. Your voice counts – on every one of the items!

Under the items, you should click the drop down option (the [+] symbol) for longer item descriptions and examples of each item. The examples are provided to illustrate how the items under consideration may arise in a case. You can close the boxes again to view all your answers together.

We encourage you to think about the degree of depravity of each item relative to other items. For example, if you find you have scored two items with the same number, consider – do you find them to be equal and earning the same rating? Or would one be higher/lower when compared to the other? If so, you may wish to adjust your scoring to reflect that difference/similarity.

You must be 18 years of age or older to participate. Participation is voluntary. Your consent to participate is signified by your completion of the survey on the next page. All data acquired from submitted questionnaires are completely confidential.

How To Rate The Items

Let’s say you were on a jury, considering the severity of an assault offense. How depraved -- on a scale of 1-100 -- would each of the following 25 potential elements of the crime be, if present? Feel free to rate making use of the whole scale.

Review the descriptions and examples for each item, then drag each slider (1–100) to record your response. You must adjust every slider before continuing.

Demographic Questions

Thank you for participating in this important study. Before your survey can be submitted, we lastly collect a few demographic and background details below. This will help us work toward seeking participation in this survey that accounts for as broad a range of backgrounds and perspectives as possible.

No one has truly distinguished the social, political, religious, and cultural influences on peoples’ perceptions of depravity. Therefore, in order to establish intents, actions, attitudes, and victimologies that we can all agree upon, this research must take into account all backgrounds and experiences.

All information you provide is stored in a secure database, where it is kept strictly confidential. We never report individual responses to ensure anonymity is maintained. So please respond to each of the questions below, taking your time to ensure that they correctly reflect your personal/professional perspectives.

What shapes your perspective

The scientific community has an interest in the impact of jail and prison. Like all other information you provide, your responses to the following two questions will remain strictly confidential:
